I was working in the energy world, managing complex projects and assets. Real estate was never the goal—until it unexpectedly became the calling.
I got my real estate license originally to sell my own properties. My family and I were already living in Charlotte, where I worked as a project director for an energy company. I was an investor in my free time who simply wanted to save money on commissions. I wasn’t planning on building a real estate sales business, but as I talked to friends and neighbors about real estate, they began asking me for help. Before I knew it, I had created Golden Realty, my first real estate sales company.
Business has always run through my veins. In high school, I thought I’d be a doctor, but college biology did not treat me well, and I realized I enjoyed finance and accounting so much more. I also enjoyed swimming, and still do, and it was during summer break that I met my wife, Holley, at a pool. We’ve been together ever since.
Graduating college, corporate jobs were scarce, especially in Pittsburgh, where I’m from. I was willing to do just about anything. In fact, I went to a headhunter for a job and got one as a headhunter! I decided to improve my skill sets and pursue an MBA at the University of Pittsburgh. After that we moved to Baltimore, where we lived for 11 years while managing renewable energy projects. That’s when my interest in real estate began. We purchased a townhouse and rented it out, letting our tenant pay the mortgage; it’s a sweet deal!
We later moved to Charlotte so I could start a new role as a project director for an energy company.
By then I was already an investor, looking to expand my portfolio. My goal was to become a business developer for corporations; real estate investment was something I did on the side. I got my license in 2002 to sell my own properties—and the rest is history.
Shortly after launching my real estate sales business, I encountered one of the toughest professional challenges of my life: the Great Recession. Nobody wanted to sell their home at that time because values had decreased. Sales dropped. Charlotte’s growth stalled. Those were lean years, and with 4 children—Kyle, Kurt, Austin, and Alana—the stress at home was at an all-time high. But we got through it.
I came out of that period more determined than ever to add value to people’s lives and help them save money, and I had to take a hard look at myself to do it. I explored the resources other brokerages provided, then had amazing success at a guaranteed offer brokerage for three years before landing at Your Home Sold Guaranteed Realty. The tools we use and the programs we offer attract both buyers and sellers, and we sell homes faster and for more money than other agents (based on corporate stats).
I always have my clients’ best interests at heart. I want to save them money and educate them throughout the buying or selling process. The advice I offer is always rooted in the big picture—which is easy to lose sight of once you’re in the weeds of a transaction. My goal is always to make the experience as smooth and stress-free as possible. A percentage of my commission, for every transaction, goes to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. They conduct cancer research to advance treatments, and no family has to pay for treatment, ever!
My kids are now adults, and my wife and I are enjoying a new season of life. She retired from teaching. I still enjoy swimming and working out; and, we boat on Lake Norman as often as possible.
Looking back, what started as a side project—real estate investment—ended up taking my life in a new direction. It’s been an honor to help so many families achieve homeownership and financial freedom through real estate.
With 20+ years of experience, I’ve helped clients navigate every type of real estate market—and I believe there’s always a solution. I back that up with my 24-hour communication guarantee: if I don’t respond within 24 hours, I’ll pay you $100.
At Your Home Sold Guaranteed Realty, we offer some of the strongest guarantees in the industry:
